Project: Rehabilitation of migrant survivors of torture, ATHENS

Background of the Project

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been providing medical and humanitarian assistance to migrants and refugees worldwide since it was founded in 1971 and in Greece since 1991. Since October 2014 MSF has provided support to migrants and refugees who have suffered torture and other forms of ill-treatment. Our aim is to offer integrated rehabilitation services, including medical care, physiotherapy, and psychosocial support to survivors of torture and ill-treatment. In particular, for survivors of torture, MSF works in close collaboration with the Prometheus II project, implemented by the Greek Council for Refugees and BABEL Day Center.

Main Purpose of the Position

Following medical assessment, plan and carry out individual treatment programs, by assessing patients’ physical state, in order to maintain, improve or rehabilitate the physical well-being of the patient and prevent physical disability.

Accountabilities

  • Assess patient physical status, using different procedures (e.g. functional capacity tests) in order to set up treatment objectives with the patient and therefore improve patient's health and wellbeing.
  • Elaborate and implement physiotherapy programmes, including physiotherapy exercises, manipulations, massages, education, utilization of physiotherapy devices and orthopaedic equipment, educating and advising patients and their care-takers on how to prevent and/or improve conditions, in order to accelerate and improve activity results.
  • Train patients and care-takers on how to avoid injury in order to create preventive behaviours.
  • Facilitate group exercise sessions and accompany and supervise the group(s) of patients
  • Actively monitor and report physiotherapy activities (correctly filling in patient files, forms, statistics, and reports) and analyse these statistics in order to improve quality service.
  • Use the scales (visual analogy pain scale, muscle grading, ROM measurements, etc.) required to monitor and evaluate the progress of individual patients.
  • Take care of physiotherapy equipment, managing the stock, making orders according to activity and cleaning up the equipment, in order to ensure its continuous availability and quality of service.
  • Undergo on-going training in order to optimize the quality of care and build up knowledge and capacity for the identification and rehabilitation of VoT.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team of professionals addressing individual patient needs in a holistic manner.

Requirements

  • Education: Physiotherapy Degree and licence to practice in Greece.
  • Languages: Greek and English essential, French is an asset.
  • Experience: 2 year experience minimum
  • Knowledge: Computer literacy essential
  • Teamwork, intercultural sensitivity, flexibility are essential.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations and victims of violence is an asset.

Post Conditions

  • Full time position, 5 days a week

2) Nurse

Project: MSF Europe Migration/ Lesbos-Balkan Projects

Location: Lesbos

Starting Date: Immediately

Duration: 3 months (high possibility of extension)

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical and humanitarian action-driven organization that offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. The MSF movement is built around 5 operational centers (OC) supported by 23 sections and offices worldwide. The MSF-Mission in Greece provides humanitarian and medical assistance to the refugee and migrants populations fleeing conflict in their home countries.

Main purpose

Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients (mainly children and adolescent), according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population

Accountabilities

  • Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment.

  • Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.

  • Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.

  • Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the midwife so they can receive the necessary treatment

  • Ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary

  • Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration

  • Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed.

  • Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorization, etc.)

  • Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.

  • Provided the vaccination to the target patient following the protocol put in place

  • Depending the organization, assured the triage in the SRH department

Requirements

  • Education: Essential recognized nurse degree/diploma. Desirable Bachelor in Science of Nursing and pediatric experience.

  • Experience:   Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGO’s desirable

  • Languages: Essential Greek and English. Desirable French, Arabic, Farsi

  • Competencies: Results and quality orientation, teamwork and cooperation, commitment to MSF principles, behavioral flexibility, stress management, service orientation
