1. Background

DRC has been operating in Greece since November 2015, providing support to the Greek Ministry of Migration Policy in ensuring dignified reception conditions for refugees and migrants arriving on Lesvos island. In March 2016, DRC expanded its operations in Athens, in response to the changing context and the build-up of refugee population on mainland Greece.

2. Purpose 

DRC is looking to recruit a qualified, flexible and enthusiastic professional to work in the sites of Northern Greece as a Teacher. Under the overall supervision of the Education Team Leader, in close cooperation with the Education officer and with the technical guidance from Education Coordinator, the teacher will be responsible for the implementation of the Education programme for migrant and refugee children, youth and adults accommodated in emergency reception site(s) of Northern Greece. Furthermore, the teacher will ensure that all education activities are of high quality, age appropriate and in line with children, youth and adults needs.

3. Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited, to the following:

• Implementation of non-formal education activities (Greek language and numeracy, English Language) for school age children (6 to 15), adolescents and youth (16-18) and adults. 

• Planning and realization of educational activities based on age, education background and individual needs of children, adolescents and adults. 

• Formation of educational groups and development of a schedule that is in line with needs of site population, i.e. children, adolescents as well as adults and in agreement with the relevant authorities and site management. 

• Ensuring that relevant project data (attendance lists, lesson plans) is accurately collected and updated on a weekly and monthly basis, including breakdown of age and gender. 

• Planning and coordinating distribution of teaching and learning material, including stationery and school kits. 

• Provision of information and advice to beneficiaries on existing education programs. 

• Contributing to the reinforcement of existing communication with persons of concern throughout DRC units and promoting the right to education for all children. 

• Collaboration with DRC cultural mediators and other staff members, in order to design and implement relevant education activities as well as life skills projects. 

• Other tasks as required by the Education Team Leader and/or Education officer to support implementation of DRC’s education program.  

4.Required Qualifications

• At least three years of experience in education and teaching. Prior teaching experience with non-Greek speaking children and adolescents is an asset. 

• University degree in education or related filed required. 

• Relevant degree and experience in teaching English will be considered an asset 

• Excellent verbal and written English and Greek skills are required. 

• Previous working experience with local or international NGOs will be considered as a strong advantage. 

• Computer skills is required.

6. Terms and Conditions 

• The contract will be under the Greek Labor Law, and all allowances will be provided to the employees (Christmas, Easter, Vacation bonus).

• The position will be based in the broader area of Northern Greece and national terms and conditions apply.

Under the overall supervision of the Education Team Leader and in close cooperation with the Education officer and the teachers, the Education Cultural Mediator, will provide support to the implementation of non-formal education activities for migrant and refugee children and adults. The Education Cultural Mediator will support the teachers in implementing a high-quality education programme, age appropriate and in line with children and adult needs. 

3. Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited, to the following:  

• Support teachers in the implementation of non-formal education activities for children and adults in refugee accommodation sites; 

• Support teachers in implementing culturally appropriate educational activities based on age, knowledge and individual needs of children and adults; 

• Provide appropriate and relevant information to refugees and migrants regarding formal and non-formal education opportunities available; 

• Provide translation/interpretation when necessary; 

• Plan, organize and implement mother tongue language classes for school age children where possible; 

• Assist the Education Officer or teachers in administrative tasks when relevant; 

• Assist in coordinating joint events with children and adults from both communities, refugees and host, for community harmonization; 

• Contributing to the reinforcement of existing communication with persons of concern throughout DRC units and promoting the right to education for all children; 

• Report any potential protection issues/risks identified in the Education facilities to her/his supervisor; 

• Other tasks as required by the Education Team Leader and Officer to support implementation of DRC’s education programme

4. Required Qualifications

• Strong verbal and written Farsi and/or Arabic and/or Kurdish skills 

• Good verbal and written English is required. Knowledge of Greek is an added advantage 

• At least one year working experience in a related field; previous working experience with local or international NGOs will be considered as a strong advantage 

• Experience of community-based or community mobilisation work in a humanitarian context is a strong advantage 

• Experience in providing recreational activities to children (drama, play, games, circus, sport, storytelling, drawing/painting, artistic activities, music, dancing) will be highly appreciated 

• Computer skills
